On your resume, you should ensure that you list your references. References can vary from the type of job you are applying to and can typically be classified into two different categories, personal references and professional references. Many employers actually like have a good combination from both of these categories that should include on average, at least three.
One of the many little but costly mistakes that most job seekers make ( besides the resume format) involves the reference section of the resume. And actually the most popular mistakes that people make, involves not listing any references at all, or available upon request.
Another common mistake that some make, is listing references but not asking those people if you could use them as a reference in the first place. For most jobs that you are highly qualified for, you will find that your references will be contacted. So remember to ask each individual that you would like to have listed on a resume or a job application before listing them as your reference. And if perhaps you have already submitted your resume to an employer, without checking first, then you will really want to contact them as soon as you can to let each individual know that you recently used them for an employment reference and that they could be receiving a phone call regarding you. After all you do not want to have them caught off guard when approached, because it certainly may impact their responses about you.
